Jimmy Dean Entertains, but Will it Sell?

I'd been looking for this spot for a few days now. Finally it popped up on Adpulp. I love the quirky, "I Heart Huckabees" atmosphere they're creating with this campaign:

But then Adpulp has to come along and point out that the above spot sells the category, not the specific product.

Well shit. I have to admit they've got a point there. But it's just so damn entertaining to me. Let's look at another spot from the campaign:

Ok, now we're getting somewhere. We've got a benefit, albeit a vague one, but Jimmy Dean will make you full. That's at least something they can lay their claim to.

Now here's another spot:

Ohhhh. So now Jimmy Dean makes you happy. Happy Breakfast. Maybe that's a new saying, sorta like "Happy New Year." In any case, it's all coming together for me now. Jimmy dean fills you up, keeps you full, and gives you a happy breakfast. That sounds pretty good.

And the campaign continues with lots of similar commercials.

I like that there are so many variations on this one concept of the sun and cloud / planet / moon cast. It's great. So few brands have big coherent campaigns like this anymore. So many are doing a little something here then jumping to something else over there and then to something different.

There's also a few webisodes of interviews with the sun, moon, cloud, etc. Looks like they were added a couple years ago. Is this campaign really that old? Maybe I'm just out of the loop.

Government Spoofs Freecreditreport.com

The FTC has decided to spoof the already spoofy (and scammy) freecreditreport.com commercials with their own (and actually free) annualcreditreport.com.

I love this. Not because the commercial is amazing or anything, although it is amusing. I just love that the government has actually decided to fight fire with fire and stick it to the douchebags that try to scam people into buying their credit reports when they can, by law, get them for free.

Now if only we can get the government to spoof the snuggie....

Tag a Dummer

This is great, the site www.tagadummer.com provides you with a template you can print out that just so happens to match the font on the nameplates of Hummers that allows them to be transformed into Dummers. Brilliant, funny, and a great way to get people into action fighting against stupidity and excess.

Kodak: Make Me Super

Kodak just did something cool.
I've been waiting a long time to say that.

The company that has provided me a means to live the last six years has also had it's head up it's ass most of that time about anything digital, advertising related or remotely 21st century. But now they've hitched their star to the same agency that did that "Elf Yourself" thing for OfficeMax last year and come up with "Make Me Super". You upload your photo, and WHAM! Before you know it you're a full-fledged super hero complete with theme song (see mine here). I started passing this around the office this afternoon and I fully expect 50 super videos in my inbox tomorrow (wouldn't it be great if Kodak had planted the seeds of this viral site by informing it's 25,000 US employees about it so they wouldn't have to read about it somewhere else? or does that violate the "rule of viral-ness"?) Of course, you can buy customized mugs, mouse pads, etc., as well as upload your super picture to your Kodak Gallery account. What? You don't have a Kodak Gallery account? Well now would be a good time to start one, wouldn't it?

Sonic: Food Math

I think these are the best commercials running on TV right now. Sonic hits home run after home run with this series. From what I’ve read all of these commercials are improvised. If that’s true these guys are comedy genius. If they’re written, then some copywriter out there needs some recognition. What’s your favorite sonic commercial?

Why Advertising Sucks Presents: Diary of an Intern

Why Advertising Sucks has been posting a "Diary of an Intern" series that's pretty damn good. As a soon-to-be intern myself I can't attest to the validity of this account, but I hope it's closer to fiction for my own sake.

A few excerpts:
...I'm not really sure what to expect but along with me, there's three guys and five girls. Not bad odds seeing as some of those guys look like total douche bags. Anyways, they gave me the option to work in any department I wanted and of course I picked Creative. Shit yeah!!!! Getting paid to think up shit and dude, I've watched so much shit that I can definitely do good ads...
...I found out that there’s copywriters and artists and lucky for me, I’m the copywriter so I have more say as to what ideas get done while the artist makes it look like it has to because that’s how it works here...
...Today was another activityless day and I couldn't handle looking at Steve make saliva bubbles, Jerry making top ten lists of who he's going to bone and Robert's corner one man brain storming that didn't include any of us, because he wanted to work on something before showing us...
Check it out here:

This has been stuck in my head lately

Every time I hear this song I think of this commercial. To me it's probably my most memorable commercial of, well, recent memory. One problem though: I was sure that it was for DHL. Then I thought it was for FedEx. The I just searched for the name of the song and the word commercial and I found it. It's for Nextel. Maybe it's just me, but that seems like problem for this ad. It's super memorable, but the brand isn't. Oh well, it's Saturday so just enjoy:

The smartest smarties commentary ever

This had me laughing this morning. Lunar BBDO over at If this is a blog then what's Christmas? has a fantastic commentary on a smarties ad. Be sure to read the whole thing, but here's an exerpt:

...surely a commentary on the release of sex offenders into the community. The Smarties grab their kids and close their doors, fearing Blue without a thought for his successful rehabilitation...

Scion 2008 TC: Slightly Tweaked, Very Funny

A friend suggested I check these out, and he was right, they're good. As much as I love the slight tweaks in each one of these ads there's something about the voice over that's really bothering me. The guys voice just doesn't sound voice over-y enough. Other than that, great ads.

I'd be offened but I can't stop laughing

So here's a poster for "Clowns without Borders" (I didn't hyperlink it because, let's face it, you weren't going to click it anyways). It seems like it could be a fake "let's make fun of the tsunami" thing, but something tells me this is all too real. All I know is that I can't help but laugh every time I look at it. (via AdFreak)
